In 1996, the Iowa Legislature approved an accreditation process for Area Education Agencies (AEAs) under which AEAs must meet and demonstrate standards defined by the Iowa Department of Education. These standards address the areas of school-community planning, professional development, school technology services, services that meet the diverse learning needs of all students, curriculum, instruction and assessment services, instructional media, multicultural gender fair, leadership and management services. AEAs must develop a Continuous Improvement Plan and submit an Annual Progress Report to the Department of Education.

All Keystone Area Education Agency programs and services are focused on one goal with all employees working to support this goal. The goal is to improve teaching skills and student learning.
